Today, we’re spotlighting SAMYUKTA, aka: Samy from Dallas TX.

Being a SINK is amazing! Each month, we feature a member of our community to share what their single and childfree life really looks like, what brought them here, what they’ve discovered, and what belonging in a like-minded community has meant to them.

In their own words, they share their experience of navigating life as a single, childfree woman finding community, and embracing a life that is intentional, independent, and fully their own. The Single and Childfree community * exists: to create a space where single and childfree women don’t have to explain themselves, defend their choices, or shrink their lives to make others comfortable. Plus, being in community with women who have the bandwidth for your friendship is so healing.

If you’ve ever wondered whether anyone else feels the way you do: you’re about to see that you’re not alone. This is where you belong.

Here's Samy's story:

Single and Childfree Community

Tell everyone a bit about you!

My name is Samy and I live in Dallas, Texas. I am an oncology nurse who is also currently in nurse practitioner school. Honestly, I’m so ready to be done with school, haha! When I have free time, I like to experiment with new recipes, specially baking, and I have a newfound interest in crafting.

What was going on in your life when you found the SINK community? And how did you find out about the space?

I have been part of this community for almost a year now a lot of I have been doing a lot of reflecting and thinking about how I want to build community specially as a woman who has opted out of pursuing romantic relationship, relationships, or having children.

I have always been thinking to myself how wonderful it would be if there was a community just for single and child free women because our priorities are more likely to align and we are more likely to relate To one another. So, I found This community one evening when I was scrolling on Instagram like I always do and I was super excited because it really felt like something that would resonate with me.

What made you decide to join and stay?

I decided to join this community because I really felt like it is something that would resonate with me and it is a wonderful place to view a sense of belonging which can be a little challenging as a single and child free woman living in a world that expects you to come up and have children, especially being from a south Asian background. I find this particular community very unique because it is meant specifically for women who are single and child free and I have never come across anything like that in my entire life. That’s what makes this especially exciting.

I have felt this way (like I belong here) ever since the very first time I came across Angela’s reel explaining the purpose of the single child free network.

Has being part of this community shifted anything for you?

Single and Childfree Community

Being a part of this community has encouraged me to find ways to celebrate myself in ways that I never would’ve thought about before. It is encouraged me to celebrate all wins regardless of how big or small. It has also given me more confidence in the future because it has shown me that it is possible to build community with other women who are also single and child free.

What’s one thing you love about your life because you’re single and childfree—or something you’re proud of that deserves more credit?

I love being a SINK because it allows me to completely live my life on my own terms 100%. For me it’s honestly the little things that make the biggest difference. I can use my time in whatever way I want, and I can make decisions without having to consult anybody and I can truly decompress after a very stressful day. I really love having my peace and quiet and space.

One thing that I’m really happy with is my ability to enjoy my own company and be content on my own. If there was anything I would like people to know about being single and child free. I would tell them that it does not have to be a lonely life. I know that a lot of times people equate being single with being lonely, but it really doesn’t have to be that way, and there are so many ways to build community as a single woman, and I think that happiness has to come from within. There’s so much to do in life and I think that being single allows one a lot of opportunity For exploration of interest, interests, and hobbies. That is definitely one aspect to take advantage of.

What is a misconception about single and childfree life you want to debunk or an issue you want to clarify? OR, even something you wan to let people know about the REALITY of SINK life?

As a single person, one assumption people frequently make is that I’m lonely or bored and honestly, that couldn’t be further from the truth. Just because one doesn’t have a romantic partner that doesn’t automatically mean that they’re lonely. I’m not saying that there aren’t people who experience that feeling, but it’s not always the case at least not for me. Also, I would also like people to understand that single people can also have A vibrant social life. Romantic relationship relationships are not the only form of companionship people can have. I feel like the companionship that we get from our friends is seriously underrated.

The Single and Childfree network

What’s one thing this community has validated for you that you didn’t realize you needed validated?

It has validated my desire to remain single and need for community.

What would you say to someone who feels alone or forgotten because they’re single and childfree?

I would encourage them to join this network because there are amazing people here.

Thanks for sharing your story, Samy. Some of us have an extra layer of tradition to contend with (or peer pressure from dead people), and it’s encouraging that there are other women charting their own paths in spite of cultural pressure.
