We’ve all been there—trapped in an endless carousel of societal “shoulds,” where milestones like marriage, kids, and home ownership are treated like the holy trinity of adulthood. For the single, child-free millennial, it can feel like we’re playing a game where we didn’t even get the rulebook.
Worse yet, we’re surrounded by people who can’t help but toss out unsolicited advice, like human versions of Instagram ads you didn’t ask for but somehow get anyway. But here’s the plot twist: you don’t need to buy into any of it. In fact, living unapologetically means throwing out the script and finally writing your own.
So, if you’re tired of feeling left out, undervalued, or treated like the “other” just because you’re not following society’s life map, you’ve come to the right place. As your resident elder millennial, I am more than honored to share some wisdom and let ya know that life is pretty damn amazing when you choose your truth!
Here’s how to find the freedom to be yourself is five easy steps.
1. Stop Apologizing for Your Happiness
Ever notice how when you tell people you don’t want kids, they respond like you’ve just revealed you’re an alien from a distant galaxy? And then, as if it’s their moral duty, they remind you that “you’ll change your mind one day.” Sure, Jan.
While they're busy projecting their future on you, your mission is to stop apologizing for the choices that bring you joy. Whether you’re spending your weekends binge-watching the latest Netflix hit without worrying about soccer practices, or you’re taking spontaneous trips because you can—that’s your version of fulfillment, and it’s every bit as valid as anyone else’s.
Unapologetic living means owning your choices with pride. Let others clutch their pearls while you thrive in your self-made paradise.
2. Ditch the People-Pleasing
If you’ve spent your life putting everyone else’s feelings before your own, it's time to have a breakup—a breakup with people-pleasing. We’ve all been conditioned to be agreeable, polite, and selfless, but let’s face it: being a doormat isn’t doing you any favors. Stop being the go-to person for everyone else’s emergencies and drama. The most freeing word in the English language? “No.”
Lemme ask you this: Are you the Beyonce or the Michelle?? Exactly. So, Beyoncé moved in silence and blow our minds with Lemonade. She didn’t wait for anyone’s approval to serve a visual masterpiece. She owned her truth, her power, and her crown. You, too, are a queen—just swap the crown for a killer pair of headphones and tune out anyone who’s not here for your vibe.
3. Curate Your Circle
Not everyone deserves a front-row seat to your life, especially not the people who make you feel like you're lacking because you haven’t ticked off the typical boxes.I did a podcast on this: Not everyone is coming with you on the level up And not everyone has earned the right to be along side of you. A reason, season or lifetime, babe!
The ones who ask why you're “still single” as if it’s a life-threatening condition or express pity when they find out you’re not a parent? Yeah, they don’t get it, and honestly, they probably never will.
Surround yourself with people who get it, who celebrate your journey as is, and who understand that success doesn’t have to be measured by conventional standards. Your tribe should lift you up, not weigh you down with their expectations. Think of it like drafting your own dream team: only those who respect your freedom and your choices make the cut. The rest? Bench them.
4. Celebrate Your Wins
Why do engagements and baby showers get all the confetti? Let’s normalize celebrating the other monumental life events—those that don’t come with society’s stamp of approval. Whether it’s launching a business, finishing your first 10k race, or just surviving the horror that is tax season solo, there’s always a reason to celebrate.
Throw yourself a “business baby shower” for that new entrepreneurial venture or host a “self-love soirée” because you’ve finally mastered the art of saying “no.” These milestones, while unconventional, deserve to be honored with just as much pomp and circumstance as the more traditional ones. Because let’s be real—choosing you in a world that constantly tries to define you is a major flex.
5. Be the Main Character
If life is a movie, too many of us have been stuck playing the supporting role in everyone else’s story. It’s time to step into the spotlight and live your life like the cinematic masterpiece it is. You are not the quirky best friend who exists to cheer on someone else’s romantic arc; you are the protagonist of your own adventure.
Channel your inner Lizzo and walk into every room like you’re the headliner. You don’t need validation from anyone to live fully and authentically. You deserve to be celebrated for exactly who you are, right now, and for everything you’re about to accomplish.
You are the main character in your life. You are the hero of your own journey.
The Freedom to Be Yourself
Living unapologetically is not just about rejecting societal expectations; it’s about reclaiming your narrative and choosing yourself. It’s about honoring the path you’re on, even if it looks different from those around you. The more you own your choices, the more empowered you become.
So, here’s your permission slip to live freely, loudly, and unapologetically. Because you don’t need anyone’s approval to be yourself. You were never meant to blend in—you were meant to stand out, to thrive, and to do it all on your terms.
Now go ahead and cue up your power anthem, because your unapologetic era starts now.
